MA Estuaries Project and TMDL Reports

Sources of Nitrogen – Pleasant Bay Watershed

The extent of nitrogen loading in Pleasant Bay has been documented by the Massachusetts Estuaries Project (MEP).  Using water quality data collected by the Alliance, the MEP identified threshold nitrogen levels needed to protect estuary health.  The threshold levels of nitrogen were codified as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for Total Nitrogen by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the US Environmental Protection Agency.  The 19 TMDLs for Total Nitrogen for Pleasant Bay are used to guide local nutrient management planning. A TMDL for bacteria was established for the Muddy Creek subembayment.
